The Benefits of Using Videos to Train Employees

For the past several centuries humans have primarily learned through text. Book after book, countless manuals, instruction sheets, and notes have been the way of teaching for years.

Yet trends continue to show that people prefer to learn through video.  One expert said that of all content consumed annually, 80% is now through video. In the Yahoo News Article Did Video Kill Text Content Marketing? It explained the concept that the human brain actually processes video ‘60,000 times faster’ than it does text.  Since we naturally as humans try and avoid stress, it is no wonder then that we as people prefer training that is simple and easy to digest.  The article provided this powerful point when it said:

“When we watch a video, we become immersed in it and [this] create[s] an empathetic connection with the screen. If you want your visitors to fall in love with your content, it makes sense to deliver it via video. That’s because it’s much easier for us to become emotionally attached to something we watch in a video than something we read in an article.”

The saying goes, if a pictures says a thousand words, then a video a million. And this principle directly applies to how you choose to train your employees.  If you want your employees to become immersed in your company, use the tools that will deliver the result.  People remember videos, they easily forget text, so use what is at your disposal.

Is creating an effective video training program worth the time and money though? The facts show that people are only prone to remember about 10% of what they read, 65% of visual content, but yet 95% when combining both audio and visual.

There are a lot of tips to apply then in creating appropriate video and visual content to train your employees.  Most of us, as the company leadership, or the employee, want the training to be too the point.  We can all think back to our school days and remember the large amounts of wasted time with our curriculum.  We may have even wondered, when are we going to get to the meat of it.  That being said, your training videos should we short and to the point; providing narration, text, and or questions to help the learner to understand the main points. Doing this correctly will bring less stress, fewer problems, and greater productivity leading to higher profits in your company.  There is really no good reason why you shouldn’t be investing in appropriate visual aids to train your employees.  Sure it’s hard to foot the bill to invest in yourself, it always is at first, but doing so will bring overwhelming benefits in the long run!

Since the pandemic, and with the overall shift in generational working attitudes, inspiring and training workers effectively has never been more important.  The generation today of DIY’ers and Influencers is much different than the history of long career workers, thus we need to act appropriately if we want to be ahead of the game.  Handle the environment with knowledge not traditional methods.  That knowledge should move you to want to create an environment and company culture that promotes good training so as to invigorate employees to stay with the company, while at the same time preparing for greater turnover within the workplace.

The only way to do just that in this world today is to utilize video to the full!  And that means investing in your company by training your employees with video, and not just any video, but high quality and effective videos.
